Reviews on “Time Jungle” (2007)

ONE OF TOP 10 NORWEGIAN JAZZ ALBUMS of 2007 by the newspaper Dagsavisen.

“This is a surprising and beautiful album, and Seim is a musician who claims a solid place in the landscape of modern jazz” Jan Granlie, Jazznytt

About the new album, “Morpho”

“Morpho” takes us in new directions. The extended melodic lines that some critics remarked on “Time Jungle”, is now accompanied by intensely tempered rhythm, meditative moods and polyphonic compositions. I am trying to put more nuances into my arrangements. And I have worked a lot with instrumentation. One of the reasons for that is - there are some new exciting possibilities. My own playing has developed. John uses for instance a lot more bowing on the double bass. Dag Magnus on the drums has also expanded his range in sound material with some new instruments. This is the first time we are recording with Arild on sax. That alone makes us sound a lot different, because his playing is quite different from Andrew, more lyrical in some ways. Andrew is with us in other ways, though, one of the songs is directly inspired by one of Andrew’s improvisations. The amazing Odd Børge Sagland, who I’ve mentioned before in this blog, contributes on five of ten songs on this album. The collaboration with OB has been very inspiring and developing for both me and the others. With OB’s attitude and the sounds from marimba, claves, gongs etc, my music has developed a stronger link to the sounds of the jungle, and clearer references to classical music. Some of the songs are starting to sound like chamber jazz. Although still in our own creative ways.

Release of “Morpho” September 2009

The release, which originally was intended to be in May, had to be postponed because of other projects. But now a new date has been set in September. The release partys (in Stavanger, Oslo and Kongsvinger) will be in mid September. The album is finished, I am holding it in my hands right now, and I must say I am very happy with the looks and feel of it! Sadly, the readers of this blog have to wait before they can buy it ;-P but it is possible to pre-order on info@timejungle.com. Some clips have been posted on myspace and on the music page

UK tour in May 2009

We had a nice little pre-release tour to York, Leeds and Edinburgh, and learnt (the hard way) how to drive at the wrong side of the road. We flew in to Edinburgh on May 11 and drove south on A1 into the mountains. We spent the night in Melrose, a charming little town on the scottish side, Borders area. Next day we drove to York, to play at the York Spring Festival, in Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall. Several guests/collaborators showed up to play with us, trumpeter Matt Postle, electronica artist Leafcutter John and a great irish sax player whose name I have to look up… Next day our trumpet friend Matt, his wife Gwen and the dog Toby took us on a walk in York. In the afternoon we drove to Leeds, a 45 minute drive. We played a split gig with Røyst trio, a vocal trio from LIMA (Leeds Improvised Music Association). Finally we got to meet our LIMA friends in their natural habitat! Next morning we visited the legendary All Brass and Woodwind store, where the owner (a LIMA friend too) fixed the tuning screw on John’s bass. Then we drove back to Edinburgh to play at The Jazz Bar. The owner, Bill Kyle is a very nice and generous guy, a drummer, who runs the venue, actually they have music 7 days a week, 3 shows a day. The next day he took us sightseeing in Edinburgh in his car!

Goodbye 2008, Hello 2009!

Time Jungle wants to thank YOU for being our friend in the past year. 2008 was good to us, hope it was good to you too. Here is a little summary: Our drummer Dag Magnus got his diploma from the Jazz Conservatory in Trondheim, which is Norway’s most prestigeous jazz education, and our sax player Arild got his from the Jazz Conservatory in Stavanger, which isn’t bad either. Time Jungle has been on two norwegian tours - we played in new places, Trondheim, Farsund and Sandnes, as well as places we’ve been before. We also had our greatest concert experience so far, being allowed to play at the great Oslo jazz club Victoria. We also started working with the fantastic percussionist Odd Børge Sagland, who will be our guest on some concerts in 2009. I myself got this amazing artist grant which is a chance to stay for free in a flat in Berlin. So I had three terrific weeks there this autumn. Happy new year everybody!

Work, work, work… and then, play!

We are currently working on new material for our next CD, and this week will be intense, with rehearsals every day. Finally, we will give a concert on resting day, Sunday, September 14, at Bøker & Børst in Stavanger, 20.30. Welcome! Later this year, we will start the serious recordings, and we also have some gigs coming up in December.
